Wonderful MCRC day at the Fair! |
|
On Sunday, September 6th, the
Minneapolis and St. Paul Republicans staffed the MNGOP booth at
the State Fair and had a wonderful time interacting with
hundreds of visitors to the booth. There is great interest and
enthusiasm for GOP ideas of limited government, personal liberty
and responsibility, and accountable, responsive politicians.
MCRC was able to reassure fairgoers that we're here and fighting
to return Minneapolis government back to the people! |

First neighborhood
forum huge success |
| On Thursday evening, May 21st,
Pat Anderson,
President of the Minnesota Free Market Institute, spoke to
over 40 Southwest Minneapolis residents on Minneapolis property
taxes and the city budget. The forum, held at the Linden Hills
park building, was both intense and informative with a lively
exchange of questions and answers. This is just the first of such
venues MCRC will be offering around the city to inform people
about taxes, schools, crime, and a number of other topics.

"Whistleblower: Is
1-mile bike path worth $9.2 million?"
Once again, the city caters to special interests over the common
good |
|
|
|
The city of Minneapolis is about to complete a
deal to
spend $9.2 million dollars of taxpayer money on a 1 mile section of a
downtown bike trail. What should be a private development project is
once again absorbing tax revenue from a city with too few cops,
deteriorating streets and infrastructure, and ever rising taxes that are
forcing citizens from their homes. Links to all city council members are
below.

system for the last several years and discovered the following
facts: |

Residential and commercial property
taxes will be increased 6% per year for 8 years. |
 |
Taxpayers currently pay $19,000 per
pupil per year. |
 |
The number of schools has decreased from
140 to 90 yet overall maintenance costs continue to rise. |
 |
There has been a 30% decrease in
students over the last 10 years yet funding has always been increased. |

Juneteenth Parade
Wrap-Up And BIG Thank You! |
|
|
Well, the Juneteenth
parade on June 21, 2008 was a big success - most people I've talked to
agreed that we had the best float in the parade. More importantly we
delivered our message - that it was Republicans who were there on
Galveston Island on June 19, 1865, freeing the slaves from their
bondage. It seems that some of the people at Juneteenth were
under the mistaken impression that it was Democrats who freed the
slaves! Click here for photos of this
great event.
Furthermore our candidates
Barb Davis White, Grant
Cermak, and Yoman Brunson
had a great opportunity to meet the people of the Northside and talk
about liberty and freedom from the chains of government tyranny.
Thank you very much to all of you who participated - you did
wonderful work
and it really paid off!
Mission accomplished. |

Democrats hit
Minneapolis hard with new tax increases! |
Here's a brief summary
of the increased tax burden on the citizens of Minneapolis:
Start By Raising The Gas Tax Immediately – With Additional
Increases Phased In During Summer Driving Season. "Raise the gas
tax by 8½ cents a gallon by 2014. The increases would be phased in,
going up 2 cents next month, another half cent on Aug. 1 and 3 cents
on Oct. 1. After that, it would go up half a cent a year for six
years. …. A passenger car owner who drives 12,000 miles a year and
gets 22 miles per gallon would pay about $46 a year more in gas
taxes." (Bill Salisbury, "Legislature OKs Roads Plan," Pioneer
Press, February 22, 2008)
Let Metro Counties Raise The Sales Tax Without A Referendum And
Add A New Excise Tax. "In addition, county boards in the
seven-county metro area could impose a quarter-cent sales tax and a
$20 excise tax on new vehicles. … No referendum would be required."
(Mike Kaszuba, Mark Brunswick, "Legislature Sends Gas-Tax Bill To
Veto-Ready Governor," Star Tribune, February 22, 2008)
New Minneapolis Sales Tax: 7.40%
And New St. Paul Sales Tax: 7.25%
"Increase the sales tax in the
seven-county metro area by a quarter of a cent to pay for bus and
rail transit. The measure would raise the sales tax 0.25 percent to
6.75 percent in suburban cities, 7.25 percent in St. Paul and 7.40
percent in Minneapolis." (Bill Salisbury, "Legislature OKs Roads
Plan," Pioneer Press, February 22, 2008)
Add Additional Sales Tax To Cars
Purchased In Metro Area. "The bill also adds a $20 sales tax to
motor vehicles sold in the metro area." (Bill Salisbury,
"Legislature OKs Roads Plan," Pioneer Press, February 22, 2008)
Increase License Tab Fees On
All New Cars.
"Boost license tab fees on newly
purchased cars and trucks. If you keep your current vehicle, your
fee would not go up. But if you buy a new car in Minnesota or a used
car from another state, you would pay a fee of 1.25 percent of the
purchase price. That would be $250 on a $20,000 car." (Bill
Salisbury, "Legislature OKs Roads Plan," Pioneer Press, February 22,
2008)
